Now that Memorial Day Weekend has come and gone, we are all excited about jumping back into the swimming pool. Most all of us will remember to bring the sunscreen, which is a good thing, but what are you doing to protect your eyes at the pool?

Did you know UV radiation increases as much as 25% when you are in or near the water? That is why we sunburn so easily poolside. That same UV radiation can be damaging to your eyesight as well, increasing your chances of acquiring cataracts, macular degeneration, or even skin cancer around the eyelids. That is why we carry a wonderful array of sunglasses that filter out those damaging UV rays. We have a complete line of sunglasses in both Rx and non-Rx to choose from.

The sun isn’t the only thing your eyes need to worry about at the pool, however. Pool chemicals can do a number on your eyes. The tear film that coats your eyes is one of nature’s magical wonders in that it’s the water, protein, and lipid combine to protect your eyes and keep them from drying out too quickly. Chlorine and saline, however, wreak havoc on your tear film, leading to redness and itching. These chemicals can also lead to Dry Eye Syndrome. If you wear contact lenses swimming, you are providing a surface for bacterial growth that can lead to complications such as corneal ulcers and in rare cases, vision loss.

This swim season we want to recommend you bring 3 things with you to the pool and 4 things back. The first is a good sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. The second is a good pair of sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays too. The third thing is a pair of swim goggles available at any sports or convenience store. That 4th thing to bring home is a wonderful smile of a fun, safe, and memorable day in the water.

With 300 plus days of sunshine every year in Colorado, we like our sunglasses around here. We have seen some great strides in both styles and in sunglass technology over the last couple of years. Europtics is proud to bring the Lucas de Staël line of handmade eyewear to Colorado. Lucas and his team turned an old Parisian printing factory into a frame workshop where optical designers, artists and jewelers work together to create some of the finest eyewear anywhere. Each piece is made of high quality surgical stainless steel, cut in Italy, welded in Paris, colored in Germany and then returned back to Paris where they are combined with organic materials such as wood, leather or stone to create truly unique pieces of optical art. An average of 31 different steps are required to produce each frame, of which each artisan is able to produce 3 frames a day. Lucas de Staël was awarded the SILMO D’OR 2014 eyewear design award at the Silmo International Optical and Eyewear Trade Fair this past fall. Cherry Creek North was the site of the 2014 Celebrate Fashion Night on September 19th and Europtics was asked to help outfit the models with fashions for their face and their eyes. We were proud to present such lines as Mykita, Barton Perreira, and Thierry Lasry as part of this year’s fashion showcase. Here is a video clip from Fox 31 in Denver, KDVR, promoting the event.

Most Colorado adults have a pair of sunglasses (unless they are driving east or west during rush hour it seems) we wear when it’s bright out, whether for skiing, golfing, picnicking,  or even just looking cool. Most of us however, are failing our children when it comes to protecting their eyes from the damaging UV radiation of sunlight, which affect children under 16 far greater then their parents. At a mile or more above sea level those rays are even more damaging to our children’s eyes. Here is a story and video from The Wall Street Journal which we has your to read over and watch.
